Gallaudet University's Department of Communication Studies is an academic unit within the College of Liberal Arts, Sciences and Technology. Courses in the department are designed to provide an important liberal arts perspective on the process and use of communication.

Communication studies is the study of formal and informal communication - communication at home, in the workplace, in social activities, through the mass media, and in the community. Interpersonal and public communication skills are competitive and marketable skills in the modern workplace.

The Communication Studies Department offers:

Included within the Communication Studies Department is the Technology Access Program (TAP).  TAP) conducts research related to communication technologies and services, with the goal of producing knowledge useful to industry, government, and deaf and hard of hearing consumers in the quest for equality in communications. The program provides education to Gallaudet students through coursework and mentored research projects related to TAP's research mission.

Mission

The Communication Studies Department provides a quality liberal arts education with a focus on communication studies. The major prepares students to be skilled communicators and effective facilitators of communication in their careers, in the community and in their personal lives.

Philosophy

The Communication Studies Department recognizes human communication as the primary social process and focuses its work on the research, study, and understanding as well as impact of communication in its various forms and within varied contexts. The Department is dedicated to the respect and promotion of ASL and English and the creation of a stimulating environment where ideas flourish. We encourage the collaboration of students and faculty in maximizing their individual and collective potential in learning, teaching, and scholarship. The Department is committed to communication accessibility and barrier free communication in the classroom through the use of visu-centric technology and design.
